Niche Finding – Discover What Works Best for You.
There are many ways to find a niche that you can market, here I will give you some inside advice on how to come up with ideas and how to implement them.
What’s a NICHE anyway?
A niche is a product category area that you are trying to market. Take fishing for example the area fishing is far too big to be able to market effectively as there are way too many subcategories and departments to cover within that niche. You can break it down however into smaller more manageable parts for example fly fishing or sea fishing. Although to manage properly these are again too big.
If we take fly fishing you can go deeper to say fly fishing in the sea. Now we are starting to get somewhere. It is smaller than the parent categories but not too small that it can be competed against too easily. What I mean here is you have wiggle room to move in different directions and keep the niche vibrant. Again for clarity sea fly fishing has many sub-topics, fly rods, reels, fly lines, target species, destinations, clothing, books, and DVDs etc.
So if you included some or all of these you could build a good authority site on sea fly fishing. If however you go deeper to say sea fly fishing rods and worked on that you would be working on what would be called a micro-niche. These can work and are quite lucrative but they can be short-lived. As with the level above you don’t have any wiggle room and nowhere to go if another authority site takes your traffic.
Example 1 , say you are a programmer in java. You have several years of experience in
writing code and know the ins and outs of building applets. You could build a niche around writing posts helping others how to build procedures and applets how to work with the java executing code and distributing finished projects.
These helpful posts to a lot of people are important when learning a new programming language. Working from books it can be very difficult to get the right results. However, a niche website with someone on hand to help and assist on projects could be invaluable to students or qualified programmers alike. While building this niche you could provide links to various amazon books etc or charge for time working on code for people. Now I know this is not up everyone’s street but to some coding is fun and so why not make a passive income from it.
Example 2, you like painting with watercolors. Why not set up a site showing your readers the steps to take to produce a complete painting.
Knowledge about canvas, paint, brushes, topics to paint, painting holidays, etc, etc, You could build up a good following if you provide good quality advice on these things and maybe sell some of your own work in the posts or affiliate to Amazon for brushes, paint, canvas, books, DVDs, etc. I am no expert on the subject but to me that could be a nice niche for someone to use.
Tips on how to “CHOOSE A NICHE”
When trying to choose a niche the first thing I would ask you to do is get a piece of paper and write down all your hobbies including sports etc. Any interests you have or anything you are anyway advanced or well trained in.
OK now hopefully you will have a list of a dozen or so. (don’t worry if you only have a couple there are other ways to create ones that we will look at later) Now I want you to number them from 1 to whatever you have making 1 the most important (or passionate) to you and the last the least important. Here we now have a list of possible niches.
Right off the bat not every niche will be a good one to work on so we need to do a bit more work to see if these are possible. As Amazon is a good place to start we can use their bestsellers lists. Go to Amazon and choose a category you are interested in then choose best sellers, should be there beside the category and click on that. There you will see what is hot right now in that category. That will give you ideas on products to review and sell. It is also a good way to keep abreast of what is hot in your niche as things are changing all the time and new products are being released daily.
There are more ways to come up with a niche market place but I would advise going with one you are passionate about this way you will already know quite a bit about it and should be able to write out articles and posts on the niche without too much research or thought. The more you like the subject the more you will want to write and talk about it.
This can save a lot of time at the beginning building content for your niche as research can eat up time like a hungry dog and can frustrate a newbie into despair and failure. You can move into other niches when you have learned all you need to know from building your first niche.
One word of caution before we finish. I would avoid three niche marketplaces as a beginner which are health wealth and relationships, these three are very lucrative but are also very competitive. You will find it very hard to make any headway if you start in these.
Any questions please leave me a comment and I will get back to you.
Choosing a niche is probably one of the most difficult things for a beginner to do. It may seem like if you choose the wrong niche, that it’ll doom you forever. But the truth is that most people start in one niche, and move onto other ones for whatever reason. Some folks are looking to make money money, others are making money but bored with their chosen subject matter. Either way, your first niche doesn’t have to be your last!
If you are just getting started, I would definitely choose something that you have experience in, which will make writing content easier. Content is going to be the driving force behind your site, so you’d better make it something you like and want to share!
Yea once you have done it, started a niche, built a site and tried a few things out you can do it all so much quicker and easier the next time. Most marketers will have several niches going at any one time unless they are very successful in one area. Some will opt for many small sites making a small income from each to generate a good living others will work on a few but build them into something bigger. It really depends on your ability to work the niche and build it.
Wow… great stuff here Mark! I’m just now starting to think that my niche is way too wide. Explains the problem with traffic and conversion. This is the first time it’s actually hit home!!! Looks like I’ve got some decisions and work directly in front of me. Much obliged!
You can work in one area of your niche and expand into others as time goes on so you can become an authority in that field. A bit of wiggle room is always good as being too small can also be disastrous if it becomes obsolete at any point. Having a bigger area can be a good idea for expansion and sideways movement further down the path. There is no exact size for a niche you can make it as big or small as you need it to work.
Your niche is the ticket and working within a niche that you have no real connection to is going to be a hard sell as time goes on…
.I also are in the fishing niche as you know….I have narrowed down my niche to location and habits of fish…..knowledge=success in my motto….
Because in reality all the best lures and the best equipment won’t catch you any fish if your not fishing in the right place…..it is an authority site also…giving me room to spread my wings….and take a few side niches like camping….is one….conservation will be another…but in time…I first want to get established as a site to get knowledge on fish habits and movements….secondary is techniques and lure selction….is it the best way to go…???? Time will tell…
Product that will sell…????? My first thoughts are knowledge books videos….then with knowledge comes equipment to put that knowledge to use….will it fly….????? Time will tell…content content content….
The Amazon search is a good start at looking at what is selling in your niche….good idea Mark…
I also think sticky…something on the site to make folks to stick around…or want to come back….
Great article Mark….newbies really have a time with the niche….I know I did…picked a few at the beginning that I had no right doing….experience….now I know better….
Amazon is a wealth of information. If new and looking to decide where to go Amazon can be really helpful. Picking a product that is selling well and working to build traffic to a sales page for that item is a very popular way to go. Others may write an e-book and sell that, others have their own e-commerce site selling physical products and others provide services in things they are good at. It really all depends on which area you are skilled or passionate in marketing can be productive if you put some work into it.
I do have to say, that is a really beautiful photograph on your Google+ page!
As for niches, mine is narrowed down to one these days. All the rest are dormant. One very hard niche I’ve gotten into is, well, an industry … alternative health.
Hey I started out in fishing and that will remain my main niche as I am so passionate about it, but recently I decided to share my learning with others who may want to try too. I have loads of other ideas on the back burner but will leave them till I have gotten my main two up to a level I want. If you spread yourself too thin you can ruin the whole business. That’s when out sourcing comes into play.
That picture is a bit worrying, is the guy trying to set fire to the money?
Seriously though, thanks for this, I learned a few things about finding a niche
You did that as a kid didn’t you harnessing the power of the sun? There is loads of ways to pick out niches and I will go into that in another article but for now picking one that you are passionate about makes for an easier work load.
When I was a lad, I learned that bugs could be burned by these…and eventually, I started a forest fire with it! Not good! Not that’s the kind of green you DON’T want to set afire!
I so agree with you on finding a niche that also coincides with your passion. If you pick something you love to do, or talk about, then it will all unfold naturally. Even if you aren’t an expert on that particular niche, if you have a huge interest, you can learn and become one. Don’t pick a niche just because you think it will be profitable. You need to have that interest to make it work.
The key is answering peoples questions, what do your readers want? If you can do that you will get a true following and your niche will grow very easily. having passion for a niche makes this task very easy…or easier than not knowing the niche well. as you say you can become an expert in a niche if you read and research what others are doing.
I find magazines are a good help in getting article content, they are up to date and you can see what people are looking for from the ads in there etc.
I guess my plunging into the Health industry was a bit premature for an amateur like me, but I have been pleased with a 1st page ranking of late. Loved how you laid it all out there with the 2 examples to help folks understand how finding a niche works.
You are definitely rocking it with this article, Mark.
Thanks Pat, it can be tough to get ranked without knowing your niche very well. It requires more research so you can write about the topic and then more research when people ask questions that you don’t know the answers too. This way it takes up more time and can be very frustrating to a newbie.
However going with a niche you are passionate about means you can hit the ground running and can answer questions from off the cuff without having to spend time in research.
Hey Mark:
The one tip that stood out for me personally was pick something you are passionate about (or at least already know something about). This tip has made the most money for me. See you on the inside.
Charlie
You are correct Charlie it has been proven time and time again.
Good advice on getting started with a list of niches. Thanks
Yea Dave some times the simplest of ideas are the best. Thanks for stopping by.
Great advice Mark especially on what to stay away from. One of my niches is marine weather and the competition is huge. T
he only good thing is i’m trying to brand my site with quality info and am less concerned with the money aspect at this time.
Yea John I am familiar with your site, as stated in my post “marine weather” is a very big niche but I see you have leveled down to the weather of the lake where you fish. That is more workable as a niche market. I think writing articles about the marine life of the lake, fishing techniques, places of interest around the lake, other wildlife, boating advice etc could build you a great authority site on that location. You can then target affiliate links for equipment and such, as well as local hotels and restaurants to make good financial gains from it. Good luck and feel free to ask any questions I am only too happy to give you my thoughts.
